The Arab Water Council (AWC) had the pleasure to welcome the
World Food Programme (WFP) team headed by Mr. Siemon Hollema, Regional Head of Programme for North Africa, Middle East, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe at World Food Programme, as well as Dr. Wadid Erian, Senior Advisor for Sustainable Development at the League of Arab States (LAS) on 20th of January 2020 at AWC Head Office in Cairo.
The Arab Water Council (AWC) had the pleasure to welcome the World Food Programme (WFP) team headed by Mr. Siemon Hollema, Regional Head of Programme for North Africa, Middle East, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe at World Food Programme, as well as Dr. Wadid Erian, Senior Advisor for Sustainable Development at the League of Arab States (LAS) on 20th of January 2020 at AWC Head Office in Cairo.
The visit aimed at discussing potential areas of cooperation in 2020 related to enhancing water and food securities in the Arab Region. The sides also conducted extensive exchanges of knowledge and experience in the use of advanced technology including Remote Sensing and GIS in examining food environments, identifying areas of importance in specific regions to determine the relationships between biophysical and socioeconomic attributes.
During the visit, the AGIR-AWC team had the opportunity to give a tour to demonstrate the technical work being conducted which might form grounds for future mutual cooperation. The tour included a visit to the Arab Geographical Information Room (AGIR)- established in 2015 and hosted by AWC with support of LAS- where loads of Data are being collected and analyzed to support decision-making on various topics. These topics currently include climate change and water & food securities with the intent to make this information available to all Arab countries in the near future.
