The Arab Water Council was glad to participate in a Technical Session at Cairo Water Week III taking place on October 20, 2020.

The session was organized by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in collaboration with FAO and LAS.

The session titled “Framework Conditions for Reuse of Treated Wastewater in the Arab Region: Lessons Learnt from Mashreq and Maghreb Sub-Regions” will be an opportunity to discuss the reuse of treated wastewater (TWW) in the Arab region within the overall framework conditions; socio-economic and political setting, where, the national policies on water, financial and economic incentives as well as the engagement of the private sector become pivotal in the future direction and development of TWW use in agriculture. The session will also highlight the current framework conditions for reuse of TWW in the Arab region, comparing the enabling environment in Mashreq and Maghreb sub-regions resulting from laws, regulations, standards, and policies, as central elements of enabling the reuse of TWW and the reflection of these framework conditions on a national level.

During this session, H.E. Professor Walid Abderrahman, AWC Vice President and professor at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, KSA will share a case study on “Effective Framework Conditions for Successful Wastewater Reuse on National Level in Saudi Arabia”. Also H.E. Dr. Hussein El Atfy, AWC Secretary-General will give a presentation on” Policy framework conditions for reuse of TWW in the Arab region” as well as Dr. Khaled Abu Zeid, AWC Technical Director who will be giving a presentation on “Reuse of TWW in the Arab region: State of the Art”.

AWC was glad to participate in a Technical session titled "Climate Change Challenges in Water security" at Cairo Water Week III and to give you more information about the Role of the Arab Geospatial Information Room (AGIR) in addressing information and analytical gaps to better inform decision-makers in the Arab region.

Part of AGIR work was presented, specifically regarding the utilization of advanced technologies in conducting regional analysis for hydro-meteorological risks aiming to “unpack” a complex topic of how emerging climate-related risks interact with structural challenges, particularly water scarcity and food insecurity, and how to foster coherence and alignment between regional, national and local actions and minimize trade-offs.
